Gregor Mendel Institute

The Gregor Mendel Institute of Molecular Plant Biology (GMI) was established in by the Austrian Academy of Sciences in 2000 to promote research excellence in the area of plant molecular biology. It is one of the few institutes worldwide that focuses on basic research using plants. Research at the GMI covers many aspects of molecular genetics, from basic mechanisms of epigenetics to population genetics. Arabidopsis thaliana is used as the primary model organism, and research groups are evaluated annually by an international external Scientific Advisory Board. It is located in the Vienna Biocenter within built in Austrian Academy of Sciences Life Sciences Center Vienna, completed in January 2006. The Vienna Biocenter, which encompasses both independent and academic research institutes as well as biotechnology companies, provides an ideal environment for the GMI. Neighboring institutes include the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP), the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology (IMBA), as well as the Max F. Perutz Laboratories of the University of Vienna and of the Medical University of Vienna. The GMI provides a lively, international working environment with some 100 staff from 30 countries. The working language is English. The GMI strives to enable a balance between career and family; in addition to laboratories specially equipped for expecting mothers and flexible working hours, subsidized day care is available at the VBCs integrated Child Care Center. It consist of 30%of post doc students , 27 %of PhD. Students leaded by 7% of the leaders. 58% of the people in GMI belong to different nationalities of Europe, along with 22% from Asia, 7% North America, 3% from South America and 1 % from Africa. 68% of the research is funded by European Grant and 32% by Austrian Grants. The GMI’s research activities are supported by a multilayered infrastructure which is provided by GMI lab management, GMI IT services, Core facilities( shared by IMBA and IMP ) and Vienna biocenter core facilities.
