Gondwana University is a university established in 2011 in the city of Gadchiroli in Maharashtra state in central India. It is named after Gondwana region in central India.
On July 23, 2010 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly passed a unanimous resolution to constitute the Gondwana University, for the area comprising districts of Chandrapur and Gadchiroli. The resolution was moved by then Higher and Technical
Education Minister Rajesh Tope. The new university was constituted by issuing notification under sub-section (2) of section 3 of the Maharashtra Universities Act 1994. In 27 September 2011, Gondwana University was carved out of RTMNU, Nagpur.
The university has faculties of Arts, Science, Law, Social Science, Commerce, HomeScience,
Education and Medicine.
There are a total of 236 colleges affiliated to the University. The prominent colleges affiliated to the University are Janata Mahavidyalaya (established in 1958) and Government College of Engineering, Chandrapur.
The Gondwana University has been conceived and formed with a foresighted view to cater the aspirations of the economically so also socio- culturally backward districts of Gadchiroli and Chandrapur. Though the network of Governmental agencies have been constantly trying to execute the state welfare policies of an all inclusive development, the resultant progress has been sluggish compared to other areas of the state. This lag has created a host of socio-political tensions and problems as is seen in the rise of Naxalites violence. Though a speedy all inclusive growth is a right answer to all this it cannot be achieved without apt vision and well-tailored methodology. The formation of a new university is therefore a right step in the direction.
