Goldsmiths University of London

Goldsmiths University of London Goldsmiths, University of London, is a public research university in London, England, specialising in the arts, design, humanities, and social sciences. It is a constituent college of the University of London. It was founded in 1891 as Goldsmiths Technical and Recreative Institute by the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths in New Cross, London. It was acquired by the University of London in 1904 and was renamed Goldsmiths College. The word College was dropped from its branding in 2006, but "Goldsmiths College", with the apostrophe, remains the institutions formal legal name. In 1891, when Goldsmiths Institute was established, its mission was ‘the promotion of the individual skill, general knowledge, health and wellbeing of young men and women belonging to the industrial, working and poorer classes’. Goldsmiths is situated in New Cross, a highly populated area of south-east London with a considerable art and music scene. The area is well served by London Overground trains at New Cross and New Cross Gate. These former East London Line stations were integrated into the London Overground network in May 2010 with services northbound to Highbury and Islington; and southbound to Crystal Palace and West Croydon from New Cross Gate only. National Rail services still run from both New Cross and New Cross Gate stations to central London termini (i.e. London Bridge, Cannon Street and Charing Cross). 7,000 students were enrolled by 1900, attracted by a thriving recreational programme and the broad range of courses in craft skills, music, languages, art and sciences. Residents living in the cramped industrial districts around New Cross could enjoy rowing, rambling, swimming or tennis; and join the choir, the Camera Club or the Men’s or Women’s Literary Society. Collaborations with other academic, community and professional organisations throughout the UK and across the world are central to the pursuit of our key strategic objectives. Collaborative provision is emerging as a significant aspect of this approach, the delivery of programmes leading to Goldsmiths awards with partner institutions, in the UK and overseas. The largest of our current projects is our relationship with LASALLE College of the Arts in Singapore, which currently delivers 20 Goldsmiths-validated BA and MA programmes, with more in development. These span a wide range of specialisms, delivered by three Faculties: Design, Performing Arts and Fine Arts, Media and Creative Industries.
