Food and Environmental Research Agency/ FERA was formed in 2009 as a joint venture in United Kingdom, owned by 75% capita and Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) (25%). Mission of the organisation is to support and develop a sustainable food chain, a healthy natural environment, and to protect the global community from biological and chemical risks. Vision of Fera is be a leading supplier of scientific solutions, evidence and advice across the agri-food supply chain. Fera aim to support customers in both the strategic and day-to-day decisions they face by understanding problems and enabling sustainable solutions through innovative thinking and the gathering and analysis of robust scientific evidence.
FERA have scientific heritage of over 100 years, 7,500 government and commercial customers, run over 600 research projects per year. They provide services to customers in over 100 countries and analyse over 90,000 samples a year. 100 procedures accredited to ISO 17025, 1,000 collaboration partners and employ over 350 scientists and technical specialists including over 70 with PhDs. FERA is the National Reference Laboratory in 9 different areas and published over 100 pre-reviewed papers per year.
Their international network of agents covers both EU and Non-EU countries. They offer competitive pricing & high quality photography and are specialised in accurate capture of animal
species & samples for use within scientific reporting and analysis. FERA scientific quality is assessed externally by a number of assessing bodies, including the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) and the Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) Monitoring Authority. The accuracy of their analytical testing is further confirmed by our extensive participation in Proficiency Testing Schemes and Inter-laboratory Comparisons. Fera Science becomes the 101st signatory of the Concordat on Openness joining organisations including universities, charities, commercial companies and research councils.
The ethical review process involves Named Persons under the Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, researchers and lay persons in order to provide ethical advice on standards of animal care, welfare and accommodation and ensures that those working with animals are aware of their responsibilities and receive appropriate training. They are trained in replacement - use of methods which avoid or replace the use of animals, reduction - minimising the number of animals used and refinement - improvements in procedures and husbandry which minimise suffering,
pain or distress or improves welfare.
