European Forest Institute

EFI is an international organisation, established by European States, 26 European States have ratified the Convention on EFI, We have c.115 Associate and Affiliate Member organisations in 36 countries, five Regional Offices and three Project Centres, Our Headquarters is in Joensuu, Finland, our Policy Support office is located in Barcelona, Spain, and we have a Liaison Office in Brussels.

Currently there are 26 Members who have ratified the Convention on the European Forest Institute. These particular Members form the highest decision-making body of EFI, the Council, The EFI Associate Members meet on annual basis at the EFI annual conference. EFI currently has c.115 member organisations from 36 countries (including also EFI Affiliate Members). The organisations mainly include research institutes and universities. They also host the EU REDD Facility, which supports partner countries in improving land use governance as part of their effort to slow, halt and reverse deforestation.

By the spring of 2013, a total of 25 European States had ratified the Convention on EFI, namely Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and the United Kingdom. These countries are Members of the Institute. The highest decision-making body of the Institute, the Council, consists of representatives of the Members, and meets in ordinary session every three years.

EFI contains Associate and Affiliate Members such as The EFI Associate Members meet on annual basis at the EFI annual conference. EFI currently has c.115 member organisations from 36 countries (including also EFI Affiliate Members). The organisations mainly include research institutes and universities.

EFI Board: The Board of EFI is responsible for establishing and keeping under review the overall research framework and the strategy of the Institute, and it supervises the Secretariat, Scientific Advisory Board (SAB). The Scientific Advisory Board advises the EFI Board, Directors and the scientific staff of the Institute on research, strategies and networking.

EFIs Research function makes use of its large network of Associate Member organisations and Regional Offices, and the two European research thematic programmes on: Sustainability and Climate Change & Forest for Society

Research and Information products include European research projects, comparative studies, European databases and thematic maps, as well as decision-support tools for European and regional level forest policy decision making.

Research is carried out in flexible teams of experts among EFI’s own research staff and other experts, based on the given task. EFI has research staff in its headquarters-based research programmes: Sustainability and Climate Change and Forest for Society, Foresight and Policy Support and at its Regional Offices: EFIMED based in Barcelona, EFIATLANTIC in Bordeaux, EFICEEC-EFISEE in Vienna and in Zagreb, EFINORD in Umeå and EFICENT in Freiburg.

EFI has a Scientific Advisory Board, which advises the EFI in scientific matters, monitors EFIs R&D activities and anticipates future research needs. Regional Offices have their own Advisory Groups to support strategic development in those locations.
