Drexel University was started in the year 1891 with the establishment of the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry. Originally a non-degree-granting institution, Drexel began conferring the Bachelor of Science degree in 1914. Since its founding, the institution has remained a privately controlled, nonsectarian, coeducational center of higher learning. Drexel is a comprehensive global research university ranked among the top 100 in the nation. With approximately 26,000 students, Drexel is one of Americas 15 largest private universities. Drexel is one of Philadelphias top 10 employers, and a major engine for economic development in the region.
