Doctor Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya, originally known as University of Saugar, was established on 18th July 1946 by Dr. Harisingh Gour. Sir Hari Singh Gour, was a great patriot, philanthropist, educationist and social reformer. To honour him, the State Legislature renamed the University of Saugar as Doctor Hari Singh Gour Vishwavidyalaya in February 1983 This is 18th University of India and the oldest and also the biggest University of Madhya Pradesh. Apart from conventional degree, post graduate and research courses, Geology, Pharmacy, Criminology & Forensic Science, Anthropology, Performing Arts, Journalism & Mass Communication, Adult Education, Electronics, Business Management, Microbiology, Biotechnology and Computer Applications are some of the special subjects, which attract a large number of students from the four corners of the country. It have adopted internationally acclaimed teaching and examination pattern the choice based credit system (CBCS) with which high academic standards, developing the skills and choosing the quality of life is achieved. More recently the university was awarded ‘A’ grade by NAAC followed by declaration as central university. This University is declared as a Central w.e.f. 15th Jan 2009. It has made significant contribution in Pharmacy education and research. It has published more than 500 research papers in last 10 years in various national and foreign journal and has two patents. So far department has produced about 110 Ph.D. in different discipline and is running various major research projects sanctioned by AICTE, DST,UGC etc. It has awarded more than 3,000 Ph.D, 4 D.Sc, and 37 D.Litt. Degrees so far.
