The CSIR Biosciences is an operating unit within the CSIR that aims to lead the establishment of a sustainable bio-economy in South Africa. While great strides have been made through creating value in biodiversity, the unit continues to develop more cutting-edge technologies, to address the country’s ever challenging social development landscape. The CSIR Biosciences is ideally positioned in that it has the primary infrastructure to integrate skills in the biological sciences (including biotechnology, chemistry, agroprocessing and engineering) with industrial and commercial experience, in order to drive the bioeconomy. The core focus of the CSIR Biosciences is to add value to our biodiversity, to develop cutting-edge technologies to address human and animal
health and to develop green technologies for sustainable manufacturing. By bridging the gap between fundamental research and commercial utilisation, the unit creates highly competitive technologies, services and products by new start-up ventures or partnerships.
