It is an academic department as well as a service unit. It plays multiple roles in providing two undergraduate programs on Physical Education and Recreation Management, Sport and Recreation Leadership, as well as a master program in Sport and Leisure Management, a research post-graduate program in sports science and recreation management, a Physical Education Courses as part of the complementary studies program, and intercollegiate sports competition program as well as managing sports facilities on campus.
While research at HKBU spans a broad range of areas, under Vision 2020, the University’s 10-year development plan, HKBU aims to focus on innovative research that is internationally competitive, support teaching and learning and has the potential to have a significant impact on society. In particular, the University encourages interdisciplinary research and theme-based research.
The Faculty of Social Sciences comprises seven departments: Education Studies, Geography, Government & International Studies, History, Physical Education, Social Work and Sociology. Our Faculty is the largest faculty in the Hong Kong Baptist University in terms of number of departments, teaching staff, undergraduate and postgraduate students. Upholding the whole person educational philosophy of the University, the Faculty is committed to nurturing student personal, intellectual and professional development with a liberal arts education. We emphasize global social science knowledge for whole person development. We also share a passion to inspire students to be creative and fulfilled builders of a fair global society and a strong University for the region.
The research ‘grand challenge’ confronting not only the world’s largest urban conglomeration – the Greater Pearl River Delta – but, increasingly, the entire planet. Much of the Faculty of Social Sciences’ most widely cited research contributes to understandings of historic and contemporary links between urban society and the wellbeing of those who live and work in cities. Through selective investments in building the critical academic mass in three ‘spoke areas’ we will position HKBU as the leading producer of knowledge on the challenges and opportunities of urbanization, both in Hong Kong, across the region, and internationally. C&W is a hub that functions as a brand for three substantive spoke areas of scholarship.
