Centre for the Study of Developing Societies

The Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS) is an Indian research institute for the social sciences and humanities. It was founded in 1963 by Rajni Kothari and is largely funded by the Indian Council of Social Science Research. It is located in New Delhi, close to Delhi University. Kothari left his position as assistant director of the National Institute of Community Development in 1963 to start the CSDS. It was housed initially in a building owned by the Indian Adult Education Association at Indraprastha Estate, Delhi. CSDS later moved in 1966-1967 to its present location.
The Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (CBS) has a residential campus located within the Vidyanagari Campus of the University of Mumbai. Two new academic and hostel blocks have been recently commissioned in addition to existing buildings and prefabricated structures. The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India and the University of Mumbai, Vidyanagari Campus jointly launched, in September 2007, a Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (CBS) offering high-quality undergraduate teaching embedded in a postgraduate and research environment. CBS offers a five-year Integrated M.Sc. program in the Basic Sciences for students who have completed 10+2 schooling or its equivalent.
A modern, flexible, integrated and seamless curriculum has been developed that places considerable emphasis on practical training and development of analytical and problem-solving skills in addition to formal learning. Some of the best teachers from University of Mumbai departments and University of Mumbai-affiliated colleges, and from proximate partner institutions like Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, IIT Bombay and the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, have helped design courses and are participating in teaching activities of the Centre in the areas of physics, life sciences, mathematics, chemistry.
CBS is an autonomous centre and is governed by a Council chaired by The Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy and co-chaired by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Mumbai. Other members of the Council include the Directors of BARC, TIFR and IIT Mumbai, and the Joint Secretary (R&D) of DAE, Government of India. National Symposium on “Frontiers of Biophysics, Biotechnology & Bioinformatics” and 37th Annual Meeting of the Indian Biophysical Society (IBS) were organized by Department of Biophysics, University of Mumbai and Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences between January 13-16, 2013.
Over 275 scientists have participated from various parts of India and overseas countries like USA, Poland, Japan, Singapore, Russia, Germany, UK etc. in this event. Overall fifty experts from abroad and India have presented their latest work and discussed the research work in various areas of Biophysics. The symposium featured 32 invited talks and 18 oral presentations. In addition to this there were more than 150 scientific posters which were presented by young scientist and faculties from India and aboard. For the first time, e-book of symposium abstract was made available through IBS website as well as University of Mumbai website.
