Research Areas
Economy and Finance
The European Union used to be called the European Economic Community. The
economy has thus always be at the heart of European Integration. This part of the house deals with those areas which have been and are likely to remain at the forefront of policy discussions, dealing with the key questions: what is the optimal design for fiscal and monetary policies in the euro area? How to create resilient financial markets, and make the
Banking Union work? How can we improve our labour markets and provide Europeans with the skills to become more productive?
Regulation
Regulation is in many respects the EU’s core business. The CEPS Regulatory Policy Unit explores policy and regulatory challenges in the areas of better regulation, internal market, competition policy,
trade and the digital economy. As regards the current EU Commission’s agenda, the unit’s activities focus on:
• The revision of EU impact assessment and ex post evaluation guidelines
• REFIT (Regulatory Fitness and Performance Programme)
• Trade policy and transnational regulatory cooperation (with high attention given to TTIP and CETA agreements)
• The development of the Digital Single Market
• The interplay between regulation, innovation and competition
Rights and Security
One of the key EU objectives of the Union is to build a common Area of Freedom, Security and
Justice over the next years without internal frontiers and in full respect for fundamental rights. This Research Area examines the implications of EU
Justice and Home Affairs policies on Rights, Security and Rule of law. Research covers issues related to migration, free movement, asylum, Schengen, fight against terrorism and crime, e-surveillance and privacy, as well as police and criminal
justice cooperation.
Europe in the World
Today’s global system is characterised by an extremely high degree of fluidity in virtually all domains. This has various impacts on the actors operating on the world stage, both in terms of actual trends and policy-relevant challenges and opportunities.
Energy and Climate Change
The CEPS Energy and
Climate Change unit investigates a broad spectrum of questions related to the Energy Union, i.e. to ensure secure, affordable and sustainable energy now and in the long term. The work is organised around 4 workstreams: energy, climate, resources, infrastructure & finance, with a particular focus on integrating these to address specific policy questions. Typically, the work combines policy relevant research with stakeholder consultation and outreach activities. The unit also acts as a ‘club’ for stakeholders, decision-makers and experts to discuss and analyse possible solutions to today’s energy and
climate challenges and ways to effectively promote and implement these solutions.
Institutions
CEPS research programme on Institutions aims to provide sound analysis of the main institutional and political challenges facing the EU and to promote public debate on how best to address them. The unit has produced compelling publications on the reform of the EU institutions, the elections to the European Parliament, the composition of key committees in the 8th EP, EU economic governance, the role of national parliaments, the rotating Presidencies of the Council and the UK’s future in Europe.
