The foundation stone of the university was laid in the year 1972. It is the business school of the Catholic University of Portugal. Católica Lisbon School of business and economics is ranked best business school in Portugal and 23rd best among European business schools. Its flagship program International Master of Science in Management is ranked 46th worldwide in the Financial Times Masters in Management 2016 ranking. The Lisbon MBA is a joint full-time program with Nova School of Business and Economics and ranks 15th worldwide.

The joint venture between the two leading business schools in Portugal Nova SBE and Católica-Lisbon is internationally also it has triple accreditation by AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA which is among less than 1 % in the world. The university has excellent collaboration with MIT Sloan School of Management MBA which was ranked 13th worldwide by the Financial Times in 2017. MIT was also ranked by the QS World University Rankings 2016/17 as the 1st University Worldwide.
