Cardiff and Vale were born after the marriage of Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan local
health boards and Cardiff and Vale NHS trust on 1st Oct, 2009.

Healthcare centres and clinics excluding 9 hospitals are under the umbrella of the board.
Major hospitals under the umbrella are Barry Hospital, Cardiff Royal Infirmary, Rookwood hospital, Saint David’s hospital, University hospital Llandough, University hospital of Wales and Whitchurch hospital.
Barry hospital-In this hospital, the following below are treated-
• cuts and grazes
• sprains and strains
• broken bones or
fractures of limbs
• bites and stings (including human bites)
• infected wound
• minor head injuries
• Eye problems such as scratches or something that is stuck in the eye.
Cardiff Royal Infirmary- This hospital has a great
history and has been caring the people of Cardiff since 1883.
For many years, it was the citys main hospital.
Rookwood hospital- It is a
rehabilitation hospital situated in Llandaff, in the city of Cardiff in South Wales. It is the site of one of only twelve spinal rehab units in the United Kingdom. It is also a regional neuro-rehabilitation hospital as well as housing a geriatric day hospital, a geriatric intermediate care facility and a geriatric
medicine rehabilitation ward. The hospital is managed by Cardiff and Vale University
Health Board. Rookwood Hospital is also the home to Rookwood Sound Hospital Radio, which broadcasts at the site and to the University Hospital Llandough and is where Radio DJ Huw Stephens began his career at 14. Rookwood is the site of one of three centres (ALACs) of the Wales Artificial Limb & Appliance Service.
St Davids Hospital- The hospital currently includes a range of services:
• in-patient Gerontology services
• in-patient and day hospital
Mental Health Services for Older People (MHSOP)
• a Children’s Centre
• Children and Adolescent
Mental Health Unit
• General and Specialist Out-patient Services
• Primary
Dental Care Unit
• the West Cardiff Community
Mental Health Team (CMHT)
• the Community Resource Team for the North and West Cardiff Locality.
University Dental Hospital- It is part of the Cardiff and Vale University
Health Board and is situated in University Hospital of Wales site.
Around 100,000 patients per year are treated and, as a teaching hospital, it has strong bonding with the School of Dentistry. It provides
dental care for patients who are screened as suitable for treatment by undergraduate dental students.
Its function is to contribute to the teaching of dental students and the training of junior NHS staff. The School of
Dentistry is the only one of its type in Wales and provides unique and important leadership in dental research, teaching and patient care.
It encompasses a Primary Care Dental Unit at St David’s Hospital in Canton, as well as the new Ysbyty Cwm Cynon in Mountain Ash and a Peripheral Hospital Dental Service, based at Whitchurch Hospital.
University Hospital Llandough- Llandough Hospital was renamed as University Hospital Llandough in 2008 .The new name mirrors its strong academic and research record as it continues to support medical students during their training. Llandough Hospital opened in 1933. It is a District General Hospital with 480 beds, located 5 miles from the centre of Cardiff, in Penarth. Llandough Hospital houses the Adult Respiratory
Medicine service for the entire Trust. A great deal of research, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate teaching takes place on site. A new Postgraduate Centre was opened in 1998.
Whitchurch Hospital- Whitchurch Hospital is a 300-bed
mental health facility in the north of Cardiff. As well as general psychiatry, services include forensic
psychiatry and addiction services. Whichurch has closed in 2016. A new facility has been opened in University of Llandough. Whitchurch Hospital finally closed its doors in April, 2016, and currently has 24 hour Security based on-Site.
