In 1972 the German Parliament approved the establishment of “Bundeswehr universities” in Munich and Hamburg. Merith Niehuss has been the president since 2005. The “Bundeswehr University Munich” Originally called “Hochschule der Bundeswehr Munchen” was founded in 1973 as part of the German Armed Forces in Neubiberg in the south of Munich, Bavaria was supposed to offer civilian academic education for military officers with university education that would prepare them for civilian careers. In 1980 it was granted with a right to award doctoral degrees, & postdoctoral lecturing qualification in 1981. Female officers and officer candidates begin studying at the university from 2001 It covers an area of 140 hectares. International initiatives like the German-American, German-Israeli or German-Hispanic clubs and the Model United Nations Society play an important role on the campus. It has the largest aviation and aerospace faculty in Germany There are around 3,700 registered students, including 360 women, 50 civilians, and 150 international students and officers & offers 13 programs of study in 7 departments of the University and 3 departments of the College.It is very successful and well established in different fields of research, especially when it comes to aeronautical engineering The university has created four interdisciplinary research centers: MOVE (Modern Vehicles), MIRA (Munich Integrated Research on Aerospace), RISK (Risk, Infrastructure, Security and Conflict), CODE (Cyber Defence).
