Beijing Institute of Genomics

Beijing Institute of Genomics (BIG) was officially founded on 28 November 2003 in the dawn of genomic science, being one of the newest institutes of life science in the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). By the end of 2013, BIG has 311 staff members, including 22 research professors. In addition, BIG has 219 postgraduate students.

The mission of the institute is to develop advanced genome sequencing and bioinformatic techniques, explore efficient statistical and computational strategies to take advantage of various omics data, and address fundamental questions of life science by integrating the above abilities. The institute will also provide key enabling genomics technology to scientists from other institutions.

Research infrastructure at BIG is organized in four sections: Genome science & bioinformatics, Computational & evolutionary genomics, Genomic variations & personalised medicine, and Core omics facility. The core facility has over 20 sequencers including Solid, Solexa, Hiseq, Ion Proton and Pacbio, and a high performance computing platform consists of computer clusters with a total 5 000 CPU cores and 3 800 terabyte high performance storage system.

Historically, the institute actively participated in the International Human Genome Project (HGP) and HapMap Project, led the Chinese Superhybrid Rice Genome Project, the pig, chicken and silkworm genome projects, and so on. Examples of recent major achievements include population genomics and clonal evolution in cancer, sperm and egg methylome inheritance.
