He holds a bachelor's degree in Chemistry - Rijksuniversiteit Gent, Belgium (1980), Master's and PhD in Molecular Biology - Rijksuniversiteit Gent (1985), and postdoctoral degree at the Pasteur Institute in Paris ('99 -00). He is a researcher at the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz - Fiocruz and head of the Laboratory of Functional Genomics and Bioinformatics. He has experience in the genomics of microorganisms and bioinformatics, with emphasis on functional genomics and biotechnology, working mainly in the development of biotechnological products, synthetic biology, and comparative genomics of microorganisms such as mycobacteria, Bacillus and study of biodiversity. Since 2002, he has been an advisor to the Vice President of Research at Fiocruz and coordinator of the Programs for the Development of Inputs, translational research in Health, and the Network of Technology Platforms
