He holds a bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences from Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos de Lima-Peru (1967), a master's degree (1972) and a PhD (1977) in Biological Sciences (Genetics) from the University of São Paulo. He is currently a researcher at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation - head of the Human Genetics Laboratory at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC / Fiocruz) and an associate professor at the University of Grande Rio (Unigranrio).
