Biography

Michael R. Sorell is interested in how countries, managers, organizations, teams and workers manage Abernathy’s (1978) and March’s (1991) “Exploitation-Exploration” framework.  To succeed in the both the short and long-term, organizations, countries, teams and individuals need to successfully manage both Exploitation and Exploration. The problem that Abernathy proposed is that short-term efficiency (Exploitation) and long-term adaptability (Exploration) are inherently incompatible with one another. (Adler et al. JOM, 2009) Exploration and Exploitation are theoretically different activities that rely on different organizational mindsets, routines and resources. (Stettner and Lavie, SMJ , 2014) The challenge for most individuals and organizations is how to balance the trade-off between short-term efficiency and long-term adaptability with limited resources and organizational routines rMichael R.
