Dr. Mandar V Deshmukh completed his school and college education at Nanded, Maharashtra. After obtaining an M.Sc. degree in Chemistry from Dr. B. A. M. University, Aurangabad, He learnt NMR techniques to study polymer blends and LCST polymers at the National Chemical Laboratory, Pune. His doctoral research at Technical University of Munich was performed in Prof. Horst Kessler's lab. Mandar V Deshmukh used high-end solution NMR methods to study inter-domain dynamics in multi-domain proteins. He moved to the University of California, San Francisco to train with Prof. John D. Gross as a postdoctoral fellow.
Key interests of Dr. Deshmukh are structural biology, RNA binding proteins, RNA interference, large molecular weight structure determination by NMR, RNA metabolism and conformational dynamics. His lab is currently investigating structural basis and mechanistic details of the RNAi pathway in C. elegans and Drosophila. The group seeks to understand structure and conformational dynamics involved in the organization of Dcr-1:RDE-4:dsRNA and Dcr-2:R2D2:siRNA complexes. As a first step towards this goal, we are solving solution structure of RDE-4 (44 kDa) and R2D2 (36 kDa). A 600 MHz NMR with a cryogenically cooled probe and a fully equipped molecular biology and biochemistry lab are at disposal for proposed research activities.
