"Katerina Kaouri use deterministic and stochastic mathematical methodologies to solve cutting-edge challenges from biology, engineering, and physics but also from industry and society. Her current research project study the crucial role uncertainty plays in the way our cells function and sustain life. This research is funded by the project ”ScaleHetNet” (Marie -Curie Career Integration Grant, PI: Dr Ioannis Lestas) which looks at the analysis and synthesis of large scale complex networks in engineering and in biology, by extending tools from control theory. With Dr Lestas we are currently focusing on the spatiotemporal behaviour of intracellular calcium since calcium is an ubiquitous second messenger communicating important information across the cell. In this work they also collaborate with Dr Ruediger Thul at the University of Nottingham. Also, with Prof. Philip Maini and Prof. Jon Chapman at the University of Oxford they are developing mechanochemical models for the coupling of the tissue mechanics with the intracellular processes, a challenge at the heart of major medical challenges, such as atherosclerosis."
