Biography

Javier Martinez-Picado is a Catalan Institute for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA) research professor at IrsiCaixa — which has as its mission to advance clinical research and translate results into patient care — and an associate professor at the University of Vic (UVic). He received his PhD from the University of Barcelona (UB) and was subsequently employed there as an associate professor lecturing on different microbiology-related subjects. In 1996, as a post-doctoral fellow of Harvard Medical School, he joined the Massachusetts General Hospital where he engaged in AIDS research. In 2000 he was appointed by the Spanish Health Department to the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital (Badalona) as a biomedical researcher. He currently leads a research programme focused on understanding how HIV causes disease in recently infected people, exploring the best antiretroviral treatment strategies and drug resistance. He actively collaborates with global HIV/AIDS vaccine development projects and serves on several governmental, academic and industry advisory boards. He has published extensively on HIV treatment strategies and HIV pathogenesis in international journals.
