Dr Sam McCullough is a veterinarian with more than 30 years' experience in virology laboratories in Australia, the UK and USA. Prior to joining CSIRO in 2009, Sam worked as a senior veterinary scientist for the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in Stormont, Belfast, UK. There he was responsible for the coordination of the epizootic disease emergency capability at Stormont and managed successful responses to a series of animal disease emergencies, including Newcastle disease in 1997 and FMD in 2001.Now Research Director at the Australian Animal Health Laboratory (AAHL), Sam leads the Diagnostic, Surveillance and Response (DSR) program which works closely with the Department of Agriculture and State laboratories to help protect Australia’s billion dollar livestock and aquatic industries from endemic and emerging infectious diseases. The DSR Program at AAHL is a vital piece of Australia’s biosecurity strategy and working within the high containment laboratories at AAHL provides specialised diagnostic capability to the nation and internationally. Sam is a member of the following National and International bodies:Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons,American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians ,Australian Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians,-Veterinary Practitioners Board of Victoria.
