Alejandro Cordero was born in Puebla (Mexico), where he obtained his B.Sc. in chemistry in 1999. In 2005, he obtained his Ph. D. in chemistry (Doctorat Chimie) at the Université Paris XI under the supervision of Prof. Samir Z. Zard. After a postdoctoral fellow at the Univesitat de Barcelona with Prof. Josep Bonjoch, he joined the Instituto de Química in 2008 as an associate researcher. Nowadays, he is fully Researcher in the department of organic chemistry in the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Mexico. he honored as Member of the National System of Research, level 1
Alejandro Cordero main research interests are focused in the development of new radical processes and their application to the synthesis of natural products. More specifically, he is interested in the Kharasch-type reactions (free-radical atom transfer reactions), because they are a powerful tools for the simultaneous construction of C-C and C-Halogen bonds. Indeed, this type of reaction provides functionalized compounds that can be used in further ionic or radical transformations. So far, he has been able to develop a new radical-ionic sequence for the preparation of epoxides and he has achieved the total synthesis of biologically active products such as defucogilvocarcin M and perhydroaza-azulene (see publications for details).
