Biography

Since September 2013 I transitioned from academia to be the head of the Clinical Unit of GSK (CUC) in Cambridge, UK. As head of the CUC my team and I focus on performing experimental medicine studies in early drug development to help bring down attrition in the clinical phase as early as possible while learning about the pathogenesis of disease and the impact of novel compounds on critical pathways of a wide area of diseases. In my academic career I was an associate professor at the Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology EULAR & FOCIS Centre of Excellence of the Academic Medical Centre/University of Amsterdam in The Netherlands, where I led the clinical trial team performing early phase experimental medicine studies in inflammatory joint diseases for about 10 years. Later my research was focussed on prevention of rheumatoid arthritis by understanding the disease mechanisms underlying the development of disease in individuals at risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis.
