Catherine A. Cukras, M.D., Ph.D. is a medical retina fellow at the National Eye Institute (NEI), National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Cukras earned her B.S.E. at Princeton University. She obtained her M.D. and Ph.D. in molecular and cellular biology from Washington University in St. Louis. Following medical school she completed her medical internship at Presbyterian Hospital in Philadelphia and her ophthalmology residency at Scheie Eye Institute at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2007, she became a board certified ophthalmologist and NEI employee. During her time at the NEI, Dr. Cukras has obtained experience in participating and designing clinical trails. In addition, she has treated patients with retinal diseases in the Clinical Center at the NEI. Currently, Dr. Cukras is developing protocols on new avenues to treat patients with retinal vein occlusions and diabetic macular edema. She is also analyzing data from the Age Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) to further understand age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of blindness in the U.S.
