Biography

Annamaria Vezzani Annamaria Vezzani is the leader of the Laboratory of Experimental Neurology at the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research in Milan. She obtained her doctorate degree in neuropharmacology at the Mario Negri Institute, and has held postdoctoral positions at, among others, the University of Maryland in the United States and Karolinska Institutet. Annamaria Vezzani's main research focus is the biochemical and molecular mechanisms of epilepsy, and in particular neuroactive peptides and inflammatory mediators. She has published over 160 original articles and review articles in academically reviewed scientific journals with high reputation, and was the first to apply gene therapy upregulation of NPY in animal models. She was chairman of the Commission on Neurobiology in the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) in 2005-2009 and is an active member of the ILAE as well as in different committees of the American Epilepsy Society (AES). In 2009, she was awarded the Research Acknowledgment Award from AES for her translational research efforts.
