Zakkiya Khan joined the Department of Architecture at the University of Pretoria as a student in 2009. Once she completed her professional master’s degree in 2012, she worked in practice in the fields of retail and hospitality design. Since then, she has become a freelance interior designer and in 2015 began her role as a lecturer at the University of Pretoria.
Zakkiya Khan’s research interests lie in exploring the role of the interior designer as a tastemaker. In particular, Zakkiya is interested in the role that tastemaking plays in creating brand identity in retail spaces. This passion arises from her practice experience in retail design and a desire to contribute to discipline-specific theory in the field of interior design.
