Professor William J. Miller holds a joint appointment in the Sociology Department and the Criminal Justice Program. His current research examines risk taking — including the relationship between casino gambling and crime, poker and mixed martial arts. He has published journal articles and book chapters on risk-taking, gambling, juvenile delinquency, and homicide, among other topics. His work has been published in a number of scholarly journals including The ANNALS of the American Academy of Political and Social Sciences, Homicide Studies and Sociological Focus. He has presented research at a variety of professional meetings and has served as a reviewer for a number of academic journals. Currently, Professor Miller serves as the Associate Provost for Continuing Studies. He is responsible for all programs housed in the Office of Continuing Studies including Adult Undergraduate Studies, Graduate Studies, Professional Development, and Summer Studies. He earned his B.A. and M.A. from Ohio University, and his Ph.D. from the University of Nevada — Las Vegas. He joined the Carthage faculty in 2000.
