Biography

Since coming to the Hull York Medical School she has, along with Miriam Johnson, Professor of Palliative Medicine, built the successful and vibrant SEDA research group (Supportive care, Early Diagnosis and Advanced disease). She assumed a number of leadership roles, and has led and developed the Phase I Scholarship and Special Interest Programme for her research group. She was Academic Training Programme Director for East Yorkshire and North East Lincolnshire, leading the NIHR Integrated Academic Training programme locally, and was a member of the national NIHR Integrated Academic Training Panel. She led the Athena SWAN agenda, which encourages and recognises commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, and has led the medical school to successful Bronze and Silver awards in 2013 and 2016 respectively. From 2015-2016 she was Deputy Dean of the medical school. She continues to work clinically as a GP at Bransholme Health Centre in Hull.

Current Research projects include: Cancer diagnosis via Emergency Presentation: a case control Study (Empress) (funded by Cancer Research UK, NAEDI funding stream)  Age linked factors and help seeking behaviour: a qualitative study exploring the effect of older people’s fatalistic attitudes towards ill health and dying.  (Funded by Cancer Research UK Early Diagnosis Advisory Group,  PI Julie Walabyeki) Understanding and reducing inequalities for people with cancer in East Yorkshire (funded by University of Hull Yorkshire Cancer Research endowment)  Understanding of cancer symptoms and healthcare interactions among smokers (funded by Cancer Research UK, NAEDI funding stream)  Policy Research Unit in Cancer Awareness, Screening and Early Detection (funded by Department of Health) Embedding Public Health in Primary Care: the example of health inequalities (funded by NHS Hull)  Primary care practitioner aspects of lung cancer diagnosis (funded by Humber and Yorkshire Coast Cancer Network)  End of life care: the impact of social and health care factors on place of death (funded by NHS Hull)  An analysis of significant event audits for cancer diagnosis (funded by the DH Cancer Policy Team)  Understanding the patient pathway and improving time-to-diagnosis of lymphoma and myeloma (funded by Cancer Research UK, NAEDI funding stream)  Patient, carer and clinician experience of the palliative care for patients in the advanced stages of heart failure (funded by British Heart Foundation and Marie Curie Cancer Care)
