Upon completion of her MSc in Medical Physiology, Dr Awad gained her PhD in Human Physiology at Newcastle University in 1997 and continued to pursue her research there as a Post-doctoral Research Associate in Neurophysiology until 2007 when she joined Northumbria University. After her PhD, Dr Awad worked as a post-doctoral researcher with Professor Clarke Slater at the Institute of Neuroscience, Newcastle University, investigating the role and expression of voltage-gated sodium channels at the neuromuscular junctions during embryonic development and under conditions of denervation in adults. Dr Awad is currently teaching on both the Medical Physiology and Neuroscience courses of the SGU MD programme. Dr Awad’s current research interests include neuromuscular transmission, specifically the role of ion channels at neuromuscular junctions. Dr Awad is a Member of the British Neuroscience Association (BNA), and the Federation of European Neuroscientist (FENS).
