Dr. Koevary has been a member of the College’s faculty since 1992 and is chair of the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Disease. He has also served as interim vice president and dean of academic affairs. Dr. Koevary teaches Anatomy/Physiology II, Immunology, Neuroanatomy, and Nutrition. In addition to his full time appointment at the College, Dr. Koevary is an adjunct associate professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in the Department of Radiology: Division of Cell Biology and Imaging Research. The focus of Dr. Koevary’s current research is the examination of the efficacy of using topically applied drugs to treat diseases of the posterior segment of the eye and central nervous system. Specifically, he is interested in developing a methodology for the delivery of monoclonal antibodies and neurotrophic factors to the retina for the treatment of macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. His lab is also involved in tumor biology studies, concentrating on retinoblastoma. Dr. Koevary earned a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the City University of New York. Since 1996, he has been an institutional review board member at Optix LP, a Cambridge based company that is designing a non-invasive glucose monitoring device. Dr. Koevary is also a medical advisory board member for the Diabetes Action Research and Education Foundation. He has worked with the American College Testing Program as a consultant for the MCAT examinations for many years and has served as a reviewer for the following journals: Investigative Ophthalmology and Vision Science, Diabetes, The Journal of Controlled Release, The Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, Expert Opinion on Drug Delivery, and Optometry and Vision Science.
