My research focuses on different aspects of the energy and mass balance of the cryosphere. I concentrate on understanding small scale processes, snow-atmosphere interactions and their influence on energy and mass balance of glaciers and ice sheets. The coupling of small scale and large scale processes is one of the more challenging questions pertaining to the global energy balance. I combine measurements and modelling so as to understand the different physical processes that are relevant for the cryosphere. My current research project "Improving ice core records - Understanding the link between rapid changes of greenhouse gases and temperature" aims at improving the understanding of the relationship between rapid changes in greenhouse gas concentrations and the temperature records obtained from ice cores to help us to learn how rapidly the atmosphere changed in the past.
