Biography

Richard Hechter is an Associate Professor of Science Education in the Faculty of Education, Department of Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning at the University of Manitoba. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of North Dakota where he studied the science teaching self-efficacy of preservice elementary science teachers. His current research program involves physics education, ethnoastronomy and social reconstructionism in education, chasing the aurora borealis with teachers and students, and science teacher professional development. In January 2017, Richard will become the Acting Department Head for CTL. Prior to his doctorate he obtained a Masters of Education with focus in science education at the University of Manitoba; a Bachelor of Education from the University of Winnipeg with emphasis in secondary science; and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Winnipeg with specialty in evolutionary zoology. Prior to joining the academy, Richard was a high school physics and science teacher for 11 years at the University of Winnipeg Collegiate.
