Dr. Richard E. Chaisson is a professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He holds joint appointments in epidemiology and in international health, both in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. His area of clinical expertise is infectious diseases, particularly HIV/AIDS. Dr. Chaisson serves as the director of the Johns Hopkins University Center for Tuberculosis Research, the director and principal investigator of the Johns Hopkins Center for AIDS Research and the director of the Consortium to Respond Effectively to the AIDS/TB Epidemic. He received his B.S. and M.D. degrees from the University of Massachusetts. He was an intern, resident and fellow at the University of California, San Francisco, where he was also an assistant professor of medicine. From 1988 to 1998 he was director of the Johns Hopkins AIDS Service, and he co-founded the Johns Hopkins HIV Clinic cohort, an observational study that has been the source of more than 130 scientific publications on the outcomes of HIV disease and its treatment. Dr. Chaisson has been recognized with several honors, including the Champions of TB Control Award from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in 2014.
