Managing Social Issues - Sport Matters
Utrecht University
Netherlands
My research focusses on the social constructions and performances of bodies and health. Informed by constructivist, feminist post-structuralist and post-colonial theories, I aim to explore the ideological power structures that underlie inequalities based on embodied signifiers such as gender, dis/ability, age, sexuality and race/ethnicity. I combine my critical theoretical viewpoint and conventional qualitative methodologies with creative methodologies (e.g. CAP ethnographies, visual methods, autoethnograpic writing) to shed light on the everyday experiences of people with (their) bodies and health and to inspire critical reflexivity and empathic understanding. I have explored the constructions and performances of bodies and health in diverse settings such as physical education, dance, school, sport, and professional organizations. Themes I address in my research include: overweight and obesity, dis/ability, motherhood, and young people's identities. The interdisciplinary nature of my research brings together sport sociology, medical anthropology, disability studies, gender studies, education, visual studies, fat studies and organizational studies. In 2014 I was appointed as an Assistant Professor at the Utrecht School of Governance.
