Nermine El Sissi is an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics and Actuarial Science. She received her Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from Pace University, New York, NY in 2002. She received her Master of Sciences in applied mathematics from The University of Texas at Dallas, in 2003, and her doctorate of philosophy degree in applied mathematics from the University of Texas at Dallas. She was a Clare Boothe Luce Assistant Professor at Trinity Washington University from 2006 to 2009 and a senior lecturer at the University of Texas at Dallas from 2009 to 2010. She later joined The American University in Cairo (AUC) in 2010. As an instructor of mathematics, one of her main goals is to expose students to the logical thinking and analytical reasoning that arise in mathematics, as well as the interdisciplinary nature of mathematics via team-based projects and in-class problem-based learning approaches. She has participated in different conferences in which she presented some of her ideas on teaching linear algebra through a writing journey (MAA MathFest, 2013, Hartford, CT), exploring calculus via problem-based learning (MAA Mathfest 2012, Madison, WI), and implementing learning community research themes to achieve more inclusive science curricula (Inclusive Science, 2008, St. Paul, MN). In addition, she organizes different activities to promote the importance of mathematics such as high school visits, on-campus events, and inviting speakers from the industry to address AUC students. El Sissi’s current research interests are in matrix analysis and number theory, combinatorics, orthogonal polynomials, and mathematics education.
