Dr. Carlson, Professor Emeritus of Optometry, was a faculty member at the College for 37 Years. She was Chair of the Department of Primary Care from 2010 – 2014 and was the course master for the first year courses for the four-year students and the AODP students in Principles and Practice of Optometry. Her clinical expertise is in primary care and pediatrics and her primary area of research is in clinical and didactic educational practices. She retired from the College in June 2014. Dr. Carlson earned her doctor of optometry degree from the New England College of Optometry in 1977. She earned a BS degree in education from Central Connecticut State College. Dr. Carlson is the former director of the Seamark Vision Clinic at the Cotting School, a private school for children with physical, medical, and communication challenges to learning. She served as a gold-standard examiner for the Vision in Preschoolers Study from 2002 to 2005. She was the Chief of Staff at the New England Eye Institute from 1995 – 2000. Dr. Carlson was a visiting lecturer at the Dublin Institute of Technology, Department of Physics/Optometry Section for six months in 1998. Dr. Carlson was a recipient of the first Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry Lester Janoff Award for Writing Excellence in Optometric Education in 2007, as a co-author of the publication “Instilling Ethics in Today’s Optometry Students,” published in *Optometric Education*. She was awarded the Dupuis-Pellerin Award for Faculty Excellence in 2002, and was named First Year Faculty Member of the Year in April 2008. She is the first author of the optometry textbook *Clinical Procedures for Ocular Examination*, currently in its fourth edition. This textbook has been used in courses at multiple optometry colleges and in ophthalmology programs throughout the United States. It has also been translated into several foreign languages. Dr. Carlson has been a member of the American Academy of Optometry since 1981 and became a Diplomate in Optometric Education in 2015. She has also been a member of the American Optometric Association, the Massachusetts Society of Optometrists, the Association of Researchers in Vision and Ophthalmology and Beta Sigma Kappa, the international optometric honor fraternity.
