The laboratory of Michela Ottolia, PhD, studies the mechanisms of operation of ion channels and transporters to understand their function in healthy and diseased hearts. The cardiac sodium-calcium exchanger is central to the lab's research interests. Lab members are investigating the exchanger's mechanisms of transport and regulation by cytosolic calcium, sodium and protons to determine how they influence heart contractility. The main tools used within the laboratory include leading-edge optical techniques combined with state-of-the-art electrophysiology and molecular biology.
