Biography

After graduating MB,ChB at the university of St Andrews in 1971 and completing internship in Scotland, Professor Hadley started surgical training at University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica before returning to Scotland to sit the Primary exams of the College of Surgeons in Edinburgh. He then moved to Durban for further surgical training under Prof LW Baker at King Edward VIII Hospital. He passed the Fellowship exams in Edinburgh in 1978. During his surgical training he spent time in the Paediatric Surgical department under Prof RE Mickel. Following Registration as a Specialist in South Africa he moved to Papua New Guinea as a lecturer in surgery at UPNG in Port Moresby, continuing his interest in Paediatric Surgery. He occupied this post for two years before returning to Scotland. In 1983 he was appointed lecturer in Paediatric Surgery in Durban and in 1990 he was appointed Professor and Head of Department at the then University of Natal. He has special interests in Paediatric Surgical Oncology, the management of paediatric surgical disorders in resource-limited areas and in surgical education within the region. He is past President of the South African Association of Paediatric Surgeons and immediate past President of the International Society of Paediatric Surgical Oncology. Additionally he is an Honorary Member of the South African Childrens’ Cancer Study Group. He is a member of the PanAfrican Association of Paediatric Surgeons and the Association of Surgeons of East Africa. In 2004 he was appointed the Rahima Dawood Travelling Fellow of the Association of Surgeons of East Africa and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh becoming the first surgeon from south of the Limpopo to be afforded this honour. He was awarded the Spinoza Professorship at the Academic Medical Centre of the University of Amsterdam in 2010 and has visited and lectured at many universities and hospitals throughout the world. He has been External Examiner at the Universities in Uganda, Zambia, Kenya, Rwanda and Malawi, and examines in Paediatric Surgery for the College of Surgeons of East Central and Southern Africa. He also regularly examines in Paediatric Surgery for the Colleges of Medicine in South Africa and is currently Moderator of the South African fellowship exams. He was elected a Fellow of the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2009. He serves on the Editorial Board of Pediatric Blood & Cancer and the World Journal of Surgery and acts as a reviewer for more than thirty leading Paediatric Surgical and general interest journals. He has published more than 150 papers in peer reviewed journals and contributed chapters in 24 books.
