Kate Spear is an Ecologist at the USGS Wetland and Aquatic Research Center in Lafayette, Louisiana, where she has worked on issues related to coastal and wetland change and ecosystems, avian and wildlife ecology, status and trends, tribal climate change adaptation planning, human dimensions, and science communication and outreach. Spear actively works with the Gulf of Mexico Alliance Habitat and Wildlife and Fisheries Priority Issue Teams; the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act Public Outreach Committee; the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program; and the Louisiana STEM Girls Collaborative Project Leadership Team. Before joining USGS, Kate worked on international avian ecology research projects in Central Balkan National Park, Bulgaria; San Luis, Costa Rica; and the Alazani River Valley in Kakheti, Georgia. She studied at the University of Georgia and the Université d'Avignon, France.
