He received his Biochemical Engineering B.S from the Instituto Tecnológico de Tuxtla Gutierrez in 2004. Then, in 2010 he received his PhD from the Biochemical Sciences program of the Instituto de Biotecnología-UNAM. During his doctoral thesis, he developed microbial production strains that resulted in two patents and a process that was developed up to pilot scale with the collaboration of national industries. He has working in that project after he completed his PhD. After that, he moved to the University of California in San Diego to do a postdoc in the Systems Biology Research Group under Prof. Bernhard. O. Palsson direction. In November 2014, Dr. Utrilla has incorporated to the Center of Genomic Sciences-UNAM to develop projects in the Systems and Synthetic Biology Fields. His research interest are to combine genome scale models to study and design the genotype-phenotype relationships with biotechnological applications.
