Dr. Esté’s laboratory focuses on the study of cofactors associated with HIV-1 and their links to AIDS pathogenesis with a view to how this information might allow the development of new therapeutic strategies. Dr. Esté has a doctorate in Medical Science from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. He participated in characterizing and developing the first class of CXCR4 HIV co-receptor antagonists and in characterizing co-receptor change induced by entry inhibitors. He has co-authored some 160 papers in international journals and has supervised 12 doctoral theses in the last ten years and filed four international patents in the last five years. His research group has received ongoing external funding since 1999, from national and European projects and from contracts with pharmaceutical companies. He is the current president of the International Society for Antiviral Research (2016-2018) and participates in the organization of various international conferences. He is editor of Antiviral Research, reviewing editor of the Journal of Biological Chemistry and a member of the editorial board of Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy. Appointed as an expert to the Research Executive Agency (REA) of the European Commission, he participates in several panels that evaluate international projects.
