ohn Winzenburg is an associate professor of music at Hong Kong Baptist University, where he conducts the Cantoria Hong Kong and the HKBU Choir. Winzenburg spent the 2004-05 school year researching Chinese-Western “fusion concertos†as a Fulbright Doctoral Fellow at the Central Conservatory of Music (CCOM) in Beijing, after earning graduate degrees in orchestral and choral conducting from the University of Iowa and University of Minnesota. As a performer, Winzenburg has conducted the HKBU choral groups since 2008, and he established the Cantoria Hong Kong in 2009. He and the Cantoria earned a Gold Medal at the Czech 2010 Festival of Songs Olomouc, and they presented a Weekend Concert at the Concert Hall, National Centre for Performing Arts in Beijing in 2012. Winzenburg also appears regularly in vocal and instrumental performances with the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble. He was selected as the featured workshop clinician at the 2013 “San Juan Coral†International Choir Festival in Argentina and as presenter at the 2014 10th World Symposium on Choral Music in Seoul, Korea. He has also recently adjudicated international choral festivals in Hong Kong and Singapore. In 2015, he presented a clinic at the American Choral Directors Association National Conference in collaboration with the National Youth Chamber Choir of Great Britain. Winzenburg has premiered a number of noteworthy works, including the U.S. premiere of “Karura†by Japanese composer Akira Nishimura with renowned oboist Thomas Indermuhle, “Aurora†by Joyce Tang (available on the Ablaze Records Millenium Masters series), the cantata “Anesti†by James Boznos, and new compositions for Indonesian gamelan, percussion, viola, sheng, and piano with the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble and Hong Kong University Gamelan Ensemble. Scholastically, Winzenburg’s international publications (published or in-press) include Perspectives of New Music, Palgrave Macmillan, The University of Michigan Press, The University of Hawaii Press, Twentieth-Century China, Asian Music, CHIME, and the Journal of the Central Conservatory of Music. His recent research has focused on 1) musical experimentation by Aaron Avshalomov in pre-1949 Shanghai, 2) hybridization and hybridity in Chinese-Western “fusion concertos,â€and 3) on new Chinese choral music. Winzenburg is the editor of the anthology Half Moon Rising: Choral Music from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan (Edition Peters, February 2015).
