Johan Swart is a full-time lecturer at the University of Pretoria where he teaches history, conservation and design. He is responsible for South African architectural history in the undergraduate programs and leads a multidisciplinary heritage design course with related theoretical components in the post-graduate studio. He tutors students in the MArch(Prof) program as well as the Applied Sciences research degrees, and advises generally in matters of heritage and conservation.
Johan Swart’s research interests fall within the broader field of heritage studies, with a specific interest in bridging cultural-historical understandings with design strategies and conceptual development. Within the Department of Architecture’s Heritage and Cultural Landscapes reseach field, he contributes to research on architectural history and urban conservation.Â
