Mr Jan Janse van Rensburg started his career in the Department of Development Aid as a development specialist. After 18 months in the public sector he moved to the Department of Economics where he has lectured Economics from first year level to Honours level in various disciplines of economics. He is currently assigned in the Department of Economics as Head of all Undergraduate courses and coordinates all undergraduate activities and has also the responsibility as Chief Operating Officer in the department. Apart form his vast experience in the theory of economics especially in an undergraduate capacity he has conducted research into several fields of economics. He has been the co-author of textbooks for Economics within the department and has delivered research papers at various conferences domestically as well as on international forums. His first love is teaching and focuses currently on the improvement of the teaching capacity in the Department of Economics, with special interest on the quality of the lecture material. He also focus on the field of Health Economics and has initiated research as part of the fulfilment of his Ph.D. degree requirements focussing on the Economic cost of substance abuse in South Africa.

His reasearch focus is on area of Health Economics.
