After graduating with a BSc in Botany in 1976, I obtained a PGCE but then become involved in research initially with plant hormones but then in yeast genetics. The astonishing rapid development of genetics in the early 1980s was a very exciting time and I took an MSc in Biochemistry which led to a PhD in yeast genetics at the University of Sheffield. This was followed by 4 years of post-graduate research in gene regulation in yeast in Northern Sweden and a year back in Sheffield in working to express a human protein in fungal and animal cell systems. From there I obtained the lectureship here at Staffordshire University in January 1993 where I have been involved in teaching genetic and molecular biology on numerous awards and in the development of awards at undergraduate and post graduate levels.
