Following medical and surgical posts at Leeds General Infirmary and St James' University Hospital Leeds, he subsequently trained as a General Practitioner in York, gaining his MRCGP (1994). He worked as a GP in the Scarborough area for over twenty years, has tutored and examined on the RCGP Yorkshire Faculty MRCGP preparation course, was registered and acted as a GP Trainer for six years, and has worked as a Medical Examiner for the DVLA. Since 2006 he has taught at HYMS in York where he is a Clinical Educational Facilitator, and gained a PGCClinEd at Newcastle University (2008). He is also a Director of Clinical Studies in Primary Care for HYMS in Scarborough.
