Biography

Dr. Ahmed Abdel-Wahab has over 20 years experience in environmental engineering teaching and research. He is a co-founder and the Technical Director of the Qatar Sustainable Water and Energy Utilization Initiative (QWE). His primary focus is on chemical and physical processes associated with treatment of water and wastewater. He has been involved in funded research projects totaling more than $12M. This research has led to publication of more 50 peer-reviewed articles in leading research journals. He is currently supervising dynamic award-winning research team consists of assistant research scientists, post-doctoral research associates, and graduate students. He is a reviewer for several international scientific journals and funding agencies. He has taught a variety of short courses on Water- and Environmental-related topics to industrial and governmental agencies in Qatar. He is member of several technical committees for a number of governmental and non-governmental agencies in Qatar. Dr. Abdel-Wahab’s primary focus is on chemical and physical processes associated with treatment of water and wastewater and solar-powered photoelectrochemical processes for carobon doixide reduction and contaminants degradation. This work includes discovery and development of new classes of treatment processes. It includes utilization of solar energy for photo-electrochemical conversion of CO2 into useful fuel, inland desalination with zero liquid discharge, reactive adsorption of heavey metas onto iron sulfide nanoparticles, development of innovative extensions of lime softening for removal of a wide range of contaminants from recirculating cooling water and brine concentrate in zero liquid discharge systems, advanced oxidation processes, advanced reduction processes, electrocoagulation; and some of the only research conducted on applying solid solution theory to water and wastewater treatment. He is also involved in developing reactive transport computational tools for environmental impact assessment and for prediction of chemical behavior in aquatic systems. Current research of Dr. Abdel-Wahab: Utilization of solar energy for photo-electrochemical conversion of CO2 into useful fuel Advanced reduction and oxidation processes Reactive adsorption using iron-containing nanoparticles Electrocoagulation and electrochemical processes Solid-solution applications for water and wastewater treatment Extensions of lime softening for removal of scale-forming chemicals from water and wastewater Reactive transport of contaminants in water streams and environmental impact assessment Zero liquid discharge systems and brine treatment Hybrid desalination systems Utilization of byproduct sulfur for hazardous wastes treatment Education Doctor of Philosophy, Texas A&M University,2003 Master of Science, Al-Minia University,1995 Bachelor of Science, Al-Minia University,1990
