Prof. Dokumacı was born in 1961 in Ä°zmir, although his family were orginally from Bayburt. He completed all his schooling in Ä°stanbul. After studying for 4 years at Ä°stanbul University Medical School, he finished his medical studies in 1985 as a military student at Gülhane Military Medical Academy (GATA). In 1986 he completed an internship, also at GATA. He carried out his specialty training in cardiology from 1988 to 1992, finally leaving GATA in 1994 as assistant professor in cardiology. In May 1994, he joined the teaching staff at EskiÅŸehir Osmangazi University Medical School and pioneered modern invasive cardiology in EskiÅŸehir. In 1996, he spent 6 months studying electrophysiology at Maastricht University in Holland with the renowned Prof. Wellens. After returning to Turkey he used his knowledge to turn his clinic into an electrophysiology center and in the same year he became an associate professor of cardiology. In 1998 Prof. Dokumacı was awarded a Research Fellowship grant from the European Society of Cardiology, the first to be awarded to Turkey, enabling him to complete a further 6 months of study in Maastricht. On returning he left Osmangazi University and started work in November 1998 at the EskiÅŸehir Regional State Hospital as a cardiologist. Here he set up the first electrophysiology laboratory in a state hospital, making EskiÅŸehir Hospital one of the few cardiac centers. After retiring in 2003 he worked in Afyon and EskiÅŸehir as a cardiologist. In 2005 he worked as the founding head physician at the Çekirge Heart and Arrhythmia Hospital in Bursa, and in 2007, after working for a short while at another center, he joined the private Sakarya Hospital in EskiÅŸehir managing the cardiovascular surgery department. Since 2000, he has been organizing courses in invasive arrythmia treatment at the private Sani KonukoÄŸlu Hospital. Prof. Dokumacı founded the Anatolian Turkish Heart Foundation in 2000 and still remains its president today. In 2002, with foreign connections, he set up the “Mustafa Öç” Pacemaker Bank providing pacemakers for heart patients with no social security entitlement. Hospital costs were covered by the bank and all other costs by the EskiÅŸehir Governor’s Office and EskiÅŸehir Municipality. The pacemakers came from abroad. He specialized in all areas of invasive cardiology, in particular the diagnosis and treatment of heart arrhythmias, and was responsible for the training of many people in the subject of electrophysiology. His clinic was a member of NASPE (North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology), the largest society in this field, and was accepted by them as a “training center”. Prof. Dokumacı sat for two terms on the executive board of the Turkish Society of Cardiology’s working group on “Arrhythmias, Pacemakers, Defibrillators and Electrophysiology” and is also a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC). In February 2014 he ran the international courses in arrhythmias at SANKO University and in May 2014 he was appointed professor of cardiology at SANKO University Medical School. Married, with 2 children, Prof. Dokumacı has a good command of English.
