Biography

Virginia Weisell Dike was born and raised in the United States and had her higher education at Harvard University (B.A. 1966), Columbia University, Teachers College (M.A. 1969) and Columbia University, School of Library Service (M.S. 1975).  After working as a volunteer in Tanzania and teaching secondary school in the U.S., she moved to Nigeria in 1975 and took up appointment as Lecturer II in the University of Nigeria, teaching first in the Department of Education. She became founding head of the Department of Library and Information Science in 1983, where she served many years as Head and the Department’s first Postgraduate Representative.  She rose to the rank of Professor effective October 1, 1991.  Prof. Dike has also been active in public service, especially in developing the Children’s Centre (1978 to date) as a model educational and recreational facility for children.  She is married to Prof. Azuka Dike and they have five children.
